Visualisation is an important skill to develop as an aspiring magician. When your spell is ready and you have assembled all of the components, the actual use of your Intent is facilitated by visualisation. If you have a symbol or a sigil that you are using for your ritual, then this is what should be visualised. If not, the image of your deity or the angelic form you call for should be visualised.

Methods of Visualisation

Surely, visualisation is just making a picture inside your head? Well yes, it is, but the picture needs to take on a life and clarity not normally used for mental images. A visualised square, for example, needs to have colour, texture, precise shape and form. If you are visualising an angelic form then you need a good image of the face, hair and body posture. You need to be able to see the robes, shimmering as they move; their colour and texture, the movement of the wings, if any, and the colour of hair, eyes and the three-dimensional nature of any object that is being held. The more vibrant and real this image is to you, then the more effect your intent will have.

Visualisation Exercise No. 1: Three-dimensional visualisation

Find a six-sided dice. Most people have one of these from an old board game that has been relegated to the loft or something of that ilk. Hold it in your hand and observe every facet of the object. Look at each face and observe how the indentations make up the numbers from one to six, observe how opposite faces always add up to seven. Feel the weight, temperature, texture, the rounded corners and look closely at the colour of the dice. Now place the dice on a table or on the floor in front of you, close your eyes, and see the dice in your mind’s eye exactly as it is in front of you. Until you have achieved a good level of mastery at this static image, do not try to visualise the unseen faces of the dice. Just keep it simple and see with your mind’s eye what you can see when you open your eyes to check the image. The important step with this first stage of the exercise is to zoom your mental image in and visualise the weight, texture, and feel of the dice exactly as it was in your hand.

The next stage of the exercise is to view the unseen sides of the dice in your mental image. Rotate the dice until you can see all six faces, feel the weight of the dice in your mind, the smoothness of the corners and edges of the dice, the little indentations that make up the number pips on each face. Completely manipulate the dice in your mind’s eye. If you are confident that this is working well for you, you could even roll the dice and see what random number your subconscious mind generates.
